RELENTLESS OUTREACH

It’s what Roca is most known for—and it works. We reach out to young people drowning in the deep end of urban violence, instead of waiting for them to have an epiphany, drop their guns, or remove themselves from dangerous relationships and situations. We track them down through their friends, call them, show up at their doorsteps, and scout the streets until we find them.

TRAUMA-INFORMED SUPPORT

You can’t undo a lifetime of trauma overnight, so Roca youth workers develop deep relationships over 2–4 years that help young people begin to heal from their hurt and anger, the key to success later on.

REWIRE CBT SKILL-BUILDING

Trauma keeps young people stuck in survival mode, so we teach cognitive behavioral theory (Rewire CBT) to help them heal. Practicing Rewire CBT builds new neural pathways, so young people can stop repeating the same harmful patterns and learn to take an 8–12 second pause before a conflict turns to violence.

TEACHING AND TRAINING

All of Roca’s programs are designed to help young people learn essential skills. We create opportunities for young people to safely engage in employment, education, parenting, harm reduction, and life-skills programming—all through a trauma-informed lens.

CASE MANAGEMENT

When young people get caught up in multiple public systems, it can be almost impossible to meet complicated requirements or access the benefits they need. Young people can’t make transformative change while they’re struggling to meet their basic needs, so we stick by them every step of the way and help them navigate.
