Philadelphia unites violence interrupters through new peacekeepers institute
When 20-year-old Imani Ringgold was gunned down while walking along the 5900 block of Market Street, pizza in hand and talking on the phone with her grandmother, community violence intervention workers were there. When 13-year-old Amir Akers and a friend were caught in crossfire on a basketball court in West Oak Lane, they were there, too, offering support, resources and a listening ear in moments of crisis. Those same frontline organizations are now being brought together through a new city-backed initiative aimed at strengthening Philadelphia’s response to gun violence.

Hartford police debut 8-hour training to ‘rewire’ officers’ emotions, reduce confrontations
Are you a “top brain” or “bottom brain” person? Most of us are bottom brainers, which means that the fight, flight, or freeze survival instincts kick in during a stressful situation. But police and correction officers are not most people, and the bottom brain instinct is not necessarily a good thing in their world of daily high levels of stress and confrontation. That’s why the Hartford Police Department has introduced a new training program aimed at helping its officers make the best “top brain” decisions in those situations.
